HOSPITAL LEVY
EXPECTED INCREASE ABOUT £167,870 NEEDED RATE OF .423) IN POUND RISE IN WAGES AND COSTS Under the estimates for the coming year to be placed before the Auckland Hospital Board at a special meeting today, it if-: understood that the finance committee will recommend an increase in the levy upon tho local bodies from .31d to .42d in the pound on the rateable capital value. The amount levied last year was £125,219, and it is expected that this year's total will be about £167,870, representing an increase of about £42.650. It was recently reported that the board expected to complete its financial year with a deficit of about £25,000. At the same time it was stated that staff wages had increased from £99,000 to £183,000. Higher wages paid to a larger staff working shorter hours will' probably be cited as one of the principal reasons for the increase in the levy. A secondary reason may possibly be the cise in other costs. It is understood that a further increase in wages of over £63,000 will have to be provided for this year, and that maintenance expenditure, which last year totalled £351,007, will be io« creased by more than £96,000.
