EASTER ACCIDENTS
MANY IN TARANAKI HEAVY TOLL OF DAMAGE [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday In spite of an intensified campaign for safety on the road, Taranaki experienced a heavy toll of damage in motor accidents in Easter Week. Although personal injuries were remarkably slight, accidents numbered at least 150 apd probably more, and insurance companies will be called upon to pay many thousands of pounds in claims.
One insurance assessor said ho had only once before known a busier period —the Christmas-New Year period of 11)36-37 —but at that time one of the other two Taranaki assessors was away. Taking that into account ho considered this Easter had been definitely worse. From information in his possession he did not think 50 would be an overestimate of the number of cases where assessors had been called in. That was not the total of accidents, however, for assessors were required only when an accident was large or costly.
Other assessors confirmed the statement that Easter had been an unusually bad period for accidents. They stated that most of the accidents occurred round New Plymouth.
