DUTY ON GUMBOOTS

DECISION OF MINISTER CHILDREN'S SMALL SIZES The position in regard to the importation of children's small gumboot* above size nine has now been clarified as the result of a telegram received yesterday morning from the Minister of Customs, the Hon. W. Xasli, by the Customs Department in Auckland. The Minister stated that gnmbootsmade only of rubber or textile and larger than children's size nine, but less than 9Jin. in height would be admitted at the same rate as that in force before the recent amendment of the. tariff, that is, 20 per cent if missible under the British preferential, tariff, and oO per cent if coming under the general tariff. "This decision, which is the Minister's interpretation of the tariff itemsconcerned, removes a grievance of the boot trade generally and also of the consuming public," said the collector of customs in Auckland, Mr. F. X. Abercrombie. "The present time is the season when gumboots are imported and there were large quantities held in bond pending this decision."
