AUCKLAND AIRPORT
ALTERNATIVE SITES EXPERT INVESTIGATION PROGRESS OF SCHEME An expert local committee is now engaged on an investigation into the costs likely to bo involved in the development of either of the two possible sites for an Auckland airport suggested by the Government committee which sat in Auckland toward the end of last year. The sites were one to be reclaimed from the upper reaches of the Manukau Harbour and the other to be reclaimed from the Waitemata Harbour, between Point Chevalier and Cox's Creek. The local committee of experts comprises the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, the superintendent and engineer of the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. D. Hoklerncss, the representative of PanAmerican Airways, Mr. Harold Gatty, Flight-Lieutenant T). M. Allan, of the Auckland Aero Club, and Commander I). It. White, of Union Airways of New Zealand. When the report of the Government committee was received it was considered by a conference of local body representatives at which a sub-com-mittee embracing all interests was set up to consider and report upon the extent to which further investigations would require to be made, as well as upon the likely cost involved in either of the undertakings. It was announced yesterday by the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, who is the chairman of the local body sub-com-mittee, that the committee of local experts had been appointed to consider all aspects connected with the proposed airport. It would furnish a .report, which would be submitted to a further conference of metropolitan local authorities on May 4.
