DEATH OF INFANT

DRAGGED UNDER TRAIN THROWN FROM FATHER'S CAR LEVEL CROSSING COLLISION [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] HUNTLY, Sunday A level crossing near Meek's Corner, Hakanoa Street, was the scene of a fatal accident shortly after four o'clock yesterday afternoon, when a two-year-old child, William Buchanan Whitelaw, a passenger in his father's car, was killed. The small sedan car was being driven by Mr. James Sutherland Whitelaw, of Portage Road, Otahuhu, who was visiting his parents in Huntlv over the Easter vacation, and his young son was standing on the front seat alongside of him. When negotiating the crossing the vehicle struck the side of a locomotive drawing a passenger train from Auckland to Hamilton. Thrown from the car, the child was dragged under the traiji and -was finally thrown clear near the adjacent cattle-stop. He suffered extensive injuries and died in the surgery of Dr. A. B. Jameson. Mr. Whitelaw suffered slight scalp wounds. The car was extensively damaged. CAR HITS POLE PASSENGER KILLED GREY LYNN FATALITY POLICE ARREST THE DRIVER Severe cuts on the throat and head, which caused his death within a few minutes, were suffered by Mr. Walter Henry Doyle, labourer, married, aged 50, of 60 Wellington Street, city, when a car in which he was a passenger struck a pole on the Great North Iload. Grey Lynn, about seven o'clock on Saturday night. Mr. Doyle was thrown against the windshield, both panes of which were shattered, a jagged edge inflicting severe wounds. The right hand headlamp of the car was pushed back against the bonnet, the mudguard was crumpled, the axle pushed back and the chassis twisted. The force of the impact threw Mr. Doyle forward against the windshield, shattering the glass, but the driver escaped with a shaking. A St. John ambulance was called immediately, but Mr. Doyle died shortly after it arrived.

The driver of the car was later arrested on a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motor vehicle.

PLUNGE OVER BANK MOTOR-CAR CAPSIZES TWO PASSENGERS INJURED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN, Saturday When coming south to Dunedin yesterday, a car left the road on Kilmog Hill, and, plunging down a bank, overturned. Two occupants of the vehicle, Mrs. Annie Harrison, and her daughter, Agnes, were taken to hospital with injuries. Mrs. Harrison suffered injuries to the head, and her daughter a broken leg.

OUTS OK THE HEAD PASSENGER IN WOMAN'S CAR [BY TELEGRAPH —FRESH ASSOCIATION'] DUNEDIN, Saturday A motor-car driven by Mr. D. S. Chisholm, rector of King's High School, yesterday collided on the Mount Cargill Road with a car driven by Miss M. A. C. Anderson. A passenger in Miss Anderson's car, Mr. John Taylor, of Wauita, West Coast, suffered cuts on the head. Both cars were extensively damaged.
