DOMAIN AT OSTEND

OPENING OF NEW RESERVE ENLARGEMENTS TO AREA Considerably enlarged and markedly improved, the domain at Ostend, Waiheke Island, was officailly opened on Saturday. The ceremony was attended by about .300 people, and athletic events and football matches were played during the afternoon. The chairman of the Ostend and Palm Beach Ratepayers and Residents' Progressive Association, Mr. H. E. McGowan. said the first matter to engage the attention of the association had been the improvement of the domain. Working bees had prepared a temporary sports ground until the work for which the Government granted £1250 was completed, and it was hoped to build bathing sheds. A number of social functions had been held to finance the scheme.

"11l 19J31, when it first became possible to uw relief scheme labour, the Ostend reserve was restricted to threequarters of an acre, but subsequently it was increased to approximately 12 acres," stated Mr. F. H. Brown, chairman of the Ostend Road Board. He mentioned that a grant toward the cost of the work was obtained from the Government and Mr. Norman Brinsden had prepared comprehensive plans, which, when applied, would provide an excellent sports area.
