THE GRADING OF MILK

PRODUCERS' CONCERN REASON FOR VARIATIONS Reference to the frequency with which the words "licence threatened" appeared in tho technical adviser's report on the samples of milk tested was made on Thursday at the meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council. Mr. J. Haslam suggested some milder form of admonition and said the comment caused suppliers to become worried lest they should lose their metfns of earning a livelihood. Milk producers were at a loss to account for the variations in tests, said Mr. 11. H. Ocklestoi], producers' representative on the board. The test sometimes fell below the standard set, while frequently the next day's test was normal, yet the conditions under which the milk was produced were the same in each case. - The weather had undoubtedly caused an increase in unsatisfactory tests, said the chairman. Mr. 1. J. Goldstine. The comments of inspectors were graduated in accordance with the degree above or below the standard set, and it would, he considered, be unwise to depart from the present system'of tests, the object of which was to keep the milk at as high a standard as possible. Members agreed with Mr. Goldstine's remarks.
