PAY SUFFICIENT
PUBLIC WORKS MEN MINISTER'S OPINION AN INCREASE UNLIKELY PRESENT LEVEL AMPLE [BY TELEGRAPH —PRF.SS ASSOCIATION'] CHRISTC'HURCH, Tuesday "An increase in the rates ol pay for public works employees, sought by the New Zealand Workers' Union, is unlikely to be granted," the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. 11. Semple, said to-day. "Nothing has been done," added the Minister, "because we submit that men on public works and on co-operative jobs earn more than award rates of pay, plus free housing, which is a big concession. They also get days' holiday pay after 12 months, and 12 days after two years." There was no need to review their wages, said Mr. Semple. The wages were 16s a day, but the men were earning more, the average being £l. Casual employees in cities were now being paid ordinary award rates, slightly higher than those formerly fixed by the department. The .Minister's statement is of interest, as there will assemble tc-morrow morning in Wellington nine delegates from the Workers' Union-tn all parts of New Zealand, who propose, before they return to their districts, to place the case for a revision of the wages schedule before Mr. Semple.
