FIFTY YEARS AGO
UNREST IN FRANCE The present political situation in Europe to a certain extent had its counterpart 50 years ago. when France ; ; was in an unsettled condition and" was nervously watchful of her neighbour, Germany. The following is an extract from the leading article published in the New Zealand Hkkald of April 13, ]BBB: — "The French Press, .we are told, considers the internal situation of the country extremely dangerous, and it is high time that it should think so. Changes of front are always dangerous in face of an enemy and France has an able adversary next door, a very much interested observer of her initernal confusion. "It may be that there is every hope that the peace of Europe, will he' preserved, but none the less the weakness of one of two parties : to a, quarrel." offers a great temptation to the other to break the peace. It cannot be doubted that the position of' France in her quarrel with Germany has not for the last 12 years been so dangerously weakened as it is at present. and st'll more from external circumstances than from the internal . situation."*"
