SWIMMING

WAITEMATA CARNIVAL

HALF-MILE CHAMPIONSHIP

VICTORY FOR A. PASCOE

Tlio new half-mile swimming champion of Auckland is A. Pascoe, who won the contest decided last night at the Waitemata Amateur Swimming and Life-saving Club's carnival in the Tepid Baths. His time was 11m ."J7 3-ss. For practically the whole of the distance Pascoo was closely pressed by P. 15. Mathieson, who, like himself, is a member of the Waitemata Club. At half-way Pascoe tutd developed a lead of about 2yds from Mathieson. They were on level terms at the end of 633 l-Uyds, and they battled keenly over the remaining seven laps. When only two were left, Pascoe led his rival by a foot,, and at the next turn was no further ahead. His stamina proved a little stronger than that of Mathieson, and over tho last lap he widened the gap, touching tho rope, after the final sprint of 13yds, a winner by nearly 2yds. Capper was third, more than 30yds behind Mathieson. Pascoc's time was much slower than the New Zealand record, 10m 53 3-ss, held by L. Newell, of Christchurch. Tho Auckland record is 11m O 4-ss, and was put up by G. Bridson several years ago. The inter-club relay championship of 500 yds, for teams consisting of intermediates and juniors, was won by Mount Eden, which gained tho Williams Cup. Sterling form was shown by the Empire Games representative, N. Crump, in the 60 2-3 yds open handicap. Ho won a qualifying heat in 34 3-os, and, making a great dash in the final, in which lie was third, was timed at 33 3-ss. This was the fastest tiino recorded by a New Zealander for the distance. The winner of the final was L. Jackson. .Mount Eden, whose time was 395. Victory was scored by Miss L. Browning-. Eastern Suburbs, in tho GO 2-3 yds ladies' handicap, in 45 3-ss.
