BOXING RING
PERCY KELLY CONVINCING The Auckland Boxing Association's carnival at the Town Hall on Monday night drew a good attendance, although probably on account of the proximity of the Easter holidays, the house was not full. Some spectacular contests were witnessed, but the decisions of the referees and judges did not meet with approval on more than one occasion. Percy Kelly enhanced his reputation by scoring a technical knock-out against Tommy Loveridge, of Taranaki, nrid it is evident that, when the Aucklander obtains greater experience in the professional ranks, be will he very hiird to dispose of against the best opposition. Vic Caltaux disappointed many of the admirers ho had gained a fortnight earlier when lie gave a convincing display against Johnston. On Monday night Caltaux was outboxed and was fortunate in being favoured with the decision. Some good boxing, mingled with a little erratic fighting, was seen in the amateur preliminaries. The officials for for the evening were: —Amateur bouts: Mr. H. W. Brien (referee); Messrs. A. B. Jolpin, J. H. Sloan (judges). Caltaux v. Marshall:' Mr. It. Meale (referee); Messrs G. Bush, J. H. Sloan (judges). Kelly v. Loveridge: Mr. Harald Baker (referee); Messrs. G. Bush, A. B. Joplin (judges). An interesting feature of the programme was the appearance in the ring; of one of Australia's most famous boxing judges, Mr. Harald Baker, of Sydney. What impressed the spectators was the unobtrusive manner in which Mr. Maker controlled tlio bout between Kelly and Loveridge. He gave the contestants very definite instructions before the start and it was not necessary for him to step between the men at any stage—they obeyed his call to break immediately it was given.
