PLAY IN AUCKLAND
10EE PUBLIC INTEREST EDEN CHAMPION TEAM BOWLING OF C. A. SNEDDEN A FINE PERFORMANCE The past cricket season in Auckland has again been very successful both from a playing point of view and the increased public interest. Series of oneday games on occasions did much for the enjoyment of the spectators, while in the two-day matches a considerable amount of bright play resulted. It is unlikely that Auckland will adopt one-dav matches. These are now provided when the first day of a series is postponed on account of wet weather. jAlthough one-day matches were adopted in Glutei bury last season, and tho scoring was high, the representative .side put up some poor showings, being beaten outright in all its Plunket Shield fixtures. It is significant, therefore, that Canterbury has decided to return to the two-day fixtures next 'season. ■ The senior championship resulted ifl an easy win for Eden, which had a margin of seven points over Grafton, the runner-up. Kdon was again strong in batting, while the bowling was consistent. A large factor.in the success of the team in this respect was the bowling of C. A. Sneddon, especially in the early stages of the season. Sneddon, who is a son of N C. Sneddon the former Auckland and New Zealand representative, made a most auspicious debut in senior ranks. During the season he took 44 wickets at a cost of 11.95 runs each, placing him second in the averages. Only J. B. Simpson, North Shore, took more wickets with 47.
Grafton started the season well, but fell.fiw&y in stages. The team is likely to do better as it has a number of promising colts in the junior ranks. A surprise was the failure of North Shore, which won the championship the two previous seasons. The club has a wealth of young material and should go close to the honours again next season. Whitelaw land Wallace were the mainstay batting strength. The team am the whole dirl not meet with the'success anticipated. Y.M.C.A. put np .stone fine performances and was a vastly improved team at the close of the season. It should be higher on the championship table next year. Pon Bonby, University and King's Okl Boys did well on 'occasions* but were inconsistent. ■'.'V •'
