INTOXICATED DRIVERS
ARREST IN QUEEN STREET MAGISTRATE IMPOSES FINE Charged with being intoxicated in charge *of a motor-car in Queen Street on Saturday. Merryn Thomas Jackson, glass blower, aged 28 (Mr. Trevor HenrvJ. appeared in the Police Court, before Mr. F. K,. Hunt, S.M., yesterday. ~ , Sub-Inspector Flanagan said accused was arrested outside the Chief Tost Office fcbout 5.30 P.m. He was taken to the Queen'? Wharf police station, where a doctor said he was intoxicated, although not to a great extent, but lie was unfit, to drive. Mr Henry said accused had been working over an oxygen flame in a f,ign factory for long hours, as a result of which his eyes had been affected. He had had no drink for two or three weeks,■ and on SaturdayJ.e had a certain amount of beer although 110. verv much. The doctor had said it the state of his eyes which made him unfit to drive. Perhaps it was the combination of circumstances which caused the trouble, the affection of the eyes being progressive. Ho had spent a right in custody. . "He should have been working long enough to know the effect, on his eyes, said the magistrate, convicting accused and fining him £'2o. His licence was cancelled, and no other is to be issued for 12 months. "We cannot have men drunk __ in charge of cars in Queen Street at o.cSU p.m." added the magistrate.
