HOSPITAL POSTS

X-RAY DEPARTMENT TWO APPOINTMENTS MADE BOTH FULL-TIME OFFICERS DOCTORS OF WIDE EXPERIENCE The full-time positions of radiologist and radiotherapist at the Auckland Hospital N*ere filled by the Hospital Board at a special meeting yesterday, by the appointment respectively of Dr. C. D. Costello, radiologist at the New Plymouth Hospital, and Dr. G. R. Nolan, assistant-radiologist at the Christie Hospital and Hold Radium ftistitute, "Withington, Manchester. The two posts, which carry salaries of £IOOO, rising in two yearly increments to £I2OO, became vacant recently through the -resignation of the full-time radiologist, Dr. W. W. Main, and the death of Dr. Neil McDougall, who was part-time radiotherapist to the hospital. The positions were adver-

tised in New Zealand, Australia and * Great Britain, and the appointments were made by the board on the recommendation of the House Committee, which had co-opted Dr. Main and Dr. Bruce Mackenzie, who are temporarily carrying on the X-ray work of the hospital on a part-time basis. Eight applications for the position of radiologist were received, including one from South Africa and one from Shanghai, which arrived too late to be considered. There were six applications for the other position. • Dr. Costello. who is 35 years of age, graduated M.B. and Ch.B. at Otago University in 1927, and obtained experience in radiology as a house surgeon at the Napier Hospital. In the following year he undertook throe months' post-graduate study at the Cancer Hospital (Free), Fulham Road, London, obtaining the diploma in radiology of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, England, and being admitted a member of the British Institute of Radiology. From 1928 to 1932 Dr. Costello was in private practice in "Whangarei, acting as part-time radiologist to the Whangarei Hospital during the last two years of that period. In 1933 he was appointed to the New Plymouth Hospital, and in the same year he obtained the diploma in academic radiology of the University of London "with distinction/' an honour which,

it is believed, had never been conferred before on any candidate for the examination. Last year he became an associate member of the British Association of Radiologists. Dr. Costello's application was supported by testimonials from Dr. J. W. Woodburn Morison,. professor of radiology in the University of London, and from three New Plymouth medical men. Dr. Nolan, who is aged 38, obtained the degrees of M.B. and Ch.M. at Sydney University in 1924. He held resident posts in three leading. Sydney hospitals before going to England, where he studied radiotherapy at Cambridge University, obtaining the D.M.R.E. diploma. He was a resident at various hospitals in London and Manchester before being appointed in 1935 to his present position in tho Christie Hospital, an institution specialising in radium and therapy and X-ray diagnosis. His testimonials arc from Dr. Ralston Patereon, director of the Christie Hospital, Dr. E. W. Twining, honorary radiologist to that hospital and to thy Manchester Royal Infirmary, and Dr. W. R. Douglas, honorary surgeon to the hospital. It is hoped that the doctors will be able to take up their new duties not later than July.
