ATLANTIC CENTENARY

STEAMER GREAT WESTERN CELEBRATION AT BRISTOL British Wireless RUGBY, April 10 The centenary of the maiden voyage of the steamship Great Western —the first steamer built for and engaged in the regular transatlantic trade —was celebrated at Bristol at the week-end.

A transatlantic steamer service was declared to be a physical impossibility in 1835. However, three years later the Great Western and three other British ships made the passage to America under steam. It was in 1840 that the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company—later the Cunard Company —secured a mail contract and began a regular fortnightly service with four paddle steamers each of about 1150 tons.
