NEW POLICE STATION

PLANS FOR AUCKLAND INSPECTION BY COMMISSIONER A considerable time was spent yesterday by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. D. J. Cummings, in company with the Superintendent of Police at Auckland, Mr. S. Till, upon consideration of provisional plans for the new central police station, and upon a close inspection of the present buildings, which have proved to be out of date and inconvenient. It is understood that this morning the commissioner and an architect from the Public Works Department will make an inspection of the whole site, which 'extends from the existing buildings in O'Rorke and Princes Streets right through to Wellesley Street East. As the plans already prepared are provisional only. Mr. Cummings said he could not discuss the disposition of the various units. He was hopeful, he said, that after the conference and inspection to-day, some finality could be reached. There were many factors to be taken into consideration—the efficiency of the new offices, accessibility for the public and police officers, freedom from noise, and the comfort of the men quartered at the station. Everything would he done to have the plans brought to the point where steps could shortly be taken to begin construction.
