Seven charges were admitted by Kenneth William Mailman, labourer, aged 25, who appeared before Messrs. D. Donaldson and A. L. Gee, J.P.'s. Statements made by accused to detectives were produced in evidence, explaining that he took a car out of a private garage in Mount Albert and drove to Helensville on March 26. While there he tried to find some money, and entered a garage workshop by breaking a window, stealing 2s in stamps and a hacksaw, which was later found in the car he converted. He entered a stationery shop, but stole nothing, and tried unsuccessfully to enter a grocery shop, the door of which was bolted. While turning the car to return to Auckland, accused said in a statement lie ran it into a ditch and it stopped, lie. abandoned it and took another, which he drove to the waterfront road at Orakei and left at the roadside on March 27. Detective L. Wilson said he arrested accused in a second-hand shop at Avondale on March 29, when he attempted to sell a quantity of tools, which hesaid he had stolen from a public works motor-truck. Accused also admitted pawning for 6s a man's watch taken from the cab of the truck, and obtaining loans amounting to £2 us on rings stolen from the home of a former employer at Helensville on March 9. All the property was recovered. Pleading guilty, accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
