CAUGHT IN BELT

MAN LOSES AN ARM INJURIES BRAVELY BORNE ACCIDENT AT RUATORIA [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] GISBORNE, Saturday Terrible injuries were suffered by a shalf-caste Maori, Mr. Dina Beach, aged 21, an employee of the Ngatiporou Daiiy Company, Limited, of Ruatoria, this morning when his left arm was torn off through becoming caught in a moving beft of a machine. Mr. Beach was working in the factory in company with another employee. The slipping of a belt was affecting the operation of a siaw, and Mr. Beach left his companion to make adjustments in an enclosed space where the belt ran over a pulley on the power shaft. A few minutes later Mr. Beach was found lying on the floor of the shed suffering from extensive injuries through having been caught iu the belt and dragged into the pulley.

Mr. Beach appeared to have climbed on to a pile of timber about 12ft. from the' floor before being caught in the belt close to the shafting. His arm was torn off at the shoulder and he had been hurled to the floor. He was conscious when found, and retained consciousness throughout the time while first-aid was being rendered, and during his conveyance to tho hospital at IV Puia, 20 miles away. The manager of the factory, Mr. Littlejohn, adjusted a tourniquet to prevent the injured man bleeding to death, and with the assistance of another employee, took Mr. Beach to Te Puia, where tho medical superindendent, Dr. E. C. Grant, having been advised by telephone of the accident, had mads preparations for immediate attention being given to the injured man. Mr. Beach bore his injuries with remarkable fortitude.

Mr. Beach, who is a prominent footballer, has been, employed at the factory for about four years in the packing department and in a general capacity.

Kilmister, a single man, who has relatives living at Karori, Wellington, was washed into the sea and drowned while iishing off tho rocks at Sunday Island, in tho Kermadec Group, according to a wireless message received by the department. Rescue efforts wore unsuccessful. The body has not been recovered. Mr. Kilmister was wearing heavy boots at tho time of the accident. THREE PEOPLE HURT MOTOR-CARS IN COLLISION [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Sunday A railway workshop employee, Mr. Leslie Harding, aged 24, of Woburn, received a severe head injury in an accident at Days Bay yesterday morning and was admitted to the Wellington Hospital. His condition to-night was catisfactory. Two other persons were also slightly injured. Mr. Harding was sitting in hiis car, which was parked at the side of the road at Days Bay. A car driven by Mr. Roland Bruce Robertson, of Eastbourne, collided with Mr. Harding's parked vehicle, turning; it compiletcly round. Mr. liobertson'si car travelled some yards after the impact, and turned completely over. Mr. Harding was severely cut about the head. Miss Doris Davey. of Eagle Street, Karori, a passenger in Mr. Harding's car, suffered minor injuries and shock. Mr. Robertson received a head injury.

MOTOR-OAR AND LORRY WAIKATO RESIDENT HURT [>Y TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Sunday A boxmaker, Mr. H. L. Leslie, of Haigh Street, Frankton Juncton, was admitted to hospital. with a severely lacerated and fractured right arm after a car containing five persons had collided with a lorry near Paraparaumu late on Saturday night. The other occupants of the car were not injured.

LITTLE GIRL KILLED COLLISION WITH MOTOR-CAR [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Sunday Colliding with a motor-car while crossing the main road at Karori about 3.35 this afternoon Shirley Patricia Bedwell, aged between 7 and JO years, suffered a severe lacerated wound in the throat from which she died shortly afterward. An ambulance called, but the child died before sha could be attended to and taken to hospital. Her home was at 8 Hathaway Avenue, Karori.
