60 NEW SUBMARINES TOTAL OF 170 BY 1942 ' LONDON, April 8 Work has been begun on the building of 60 new submarines, under a firogramme designed to give Italy at east 170 of these boats by 1942, says the Rome correspondent of the News Chronicle. Most of these will be small or medium-sized for the Mediterranean service, but there will be many lone-, range craft capable of operating in the Indian Ocean. * 1
AMERICAN PROGRAMME BATTLESHIPS AND CRUISERS WASHINGTON, April 8 The chief of the naval operations staff, Admiral William D. Leahv, stated to-day that the construction of two/'new battleships provided for in the new Navy Supply Bill, will be started _ before the end of the year. probably he slightly in excess of <35,000 tons each, owing to the invocation of the escalator clause of the London Naval Treaty. Two new cruisers would also be started at the same time.
