PRICES AT SMITHFIELD VALUES FOR LAMB ADVANCE CHILLED BEEF AGAIN EASIER The Smithfield market for lamb shows, a firmer tendency, with a general advance in prices. Consumption continues excellent, according to the weekly report of the Xew Zealand Meat Producers' Board. In the mutton market wethers are steady on short supplies. Ewes are unchanged, but trade is slow. Frozen beef is nominal owing to short spot stocks. Chilled beef is again easier on heavy supplies. .New Zealand porker pigs arc steady with prices unchanged, while baconers are firm on short spot stocks. QUIET MARKET FOR WETHERS EWES IN MODERATE DEMAND The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office as at the close of business this week: —Wethers: The market is quiet and unchanged. Ewes: There is a moderate demand. Lambs: There is a good demand. Prices of beef have been progressively defining owing to the plentiful supplies.

HEMP AND TOW GRADINGS IN MARCH Gradings of hemp for export at New Zealand ports during March amounted to 2386 bales, a decrease of 1271 bales, compared with the figures for the same month last year. The gradings were as follows, figures for March of\ last year being given in. parentheses:—Good fair 22 (290); high fair, 549 (1169); low fair, 695 (904) ; fommon, 579 (603); reject, 514 (685); condemned, 27 (6). The tow graded in March amounted to 281 bales, a decrease of 10 bales. The grading classes compare as follows:—First grade, 0 (4); record grade, 85 (122); third grade, 166 (133); condemned, HO (.'s2). Stripper slips showed an increase of 32 bales, none having been graded in March, 1937. The majority of the gradings were third grade, two bales being condemned. No stripped tow was graded. SHILLINGS, LIMITED MERGER WITH MACDUFFS An extraordinary general meeting of Shillings, Limited, will be held on April 30, according to a report from Wellington. Resolutions will be submitted to wind up the company to enable the liquidator to distribute among contributaries, in the proportion of eleven ordinary shares for every ordjnary share held in the company, the 137,500 ordinary shares of £1 each credited as fully paid up in the capital of Macduifs, Limited. These shares formed part of the consideration for the sale to the latter company. EASTER STOCK SALES DAY EARLIER THIS WEEK Owing to the intervention of Good Friday and the necessity for a readjustment of butcher's arrangements with the abattoirs for the killing and delivery of meat for Easter the fat stock sales at Westfield this week will be held tomorrow, instead of Wednesday. The store cattle sale will be held on Wednesday instead of Thursday.
