ROAD SAFETY

MOTOR-CYCLISTS' PLAN FELLOWSHIP LEAGUE HONORARY AUXILIARY PATROLS [BY TELEGRAPH —FRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHUECH, Friday The establishment of a National Road Fellowship League and the appointment of honorary auxiliary road patrols, were two measures which were fully discussed at a representative conference to-day of delegates from the three motor-cycle clubs of Christchurch. Mr. T. Milliken, chairman of the Traffic Committee of the City Council, and Mr. J. Bruorton, chief traffic inspector, were present.

Recent statistics had shown that the proportion of accidents involving motorcycles was at present somewhat higher than those of some other types of vehicles, said the representatives from the council, and the clubs were to be commended for their voluntary efforts to increase road safety. The conference was the outcome of a . deputation which waited upon the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, last week, when measures toward increasing road safety were fully discussed. The clubs suggested that if patrols were instituted they should be purely in the nature of assistance patrols, appointed for the purpose of giving advice to other motor-cyclists, ■ and generally co-operating with the local traffic authorities.

The scheme had been employed in America for some time with entirely successful results. The task would call for considerable tact and experience, and only picked men would be allowed to operate. The Road Fellowship League, if formed, would be a Do-minion-wide organisation, formed exclusively for the purpose of increasing courtesy, and safety on the roads. It would be entirely outside any existing motoring body.- , After considerable discussion the proposals were referred back to the executives of the respective clubs, with a recommendation that they receive favourable consideration.
