THE RABBIT PEST
LARGE UNCONTROLLED AREA EAST WAIKATO PROPOSAL ' [from our own correspondent] PUTARURU. Friday A decision to confer with the Peria and Whitehall Rabbit Boards in order to make joint application to the Government for authority to take over an uncontrolled area of about .30.000 acres between the boundaries of the Peria, Whitehall and East Waikato Rabbit Boards' territories, nvas made by the East Waikato board at a meeting held in Putnruru. The uncontrolled area was stated to be overrun with rabbits and it was proposed to add a portion to each of the three boards' territories so that it could be controlled. A petition was received by the East Waikato board from ratepayers in the particular area it proposed to take ovar showing that a majority were in favour of giving, the board control. A lette-r was read from the Whitehall board, however, stating that it had on two occasions canvassed the area proposed to be added to its boundary and both times had failed to get a majority of ratepayers to agree to the proposal. Air. A. L. Mason, secretary of the East Waikato board, stated that he had written to the Peria board explaining Whitehall's position and asking for an exchange of views on the subject. No reply had yet been received. Members agreed that no one board coidd go on with the proposal of taking over portions of the area without the others. On th<\ motion of Mr. J. J. Shine it was then decided to request the Peria and Whitehall boards to join with the Jiast Waikato board in making application to the Government to have the area compulsorilv taken over.
