Motoring and Restlessness

"Motoring has brought a restlessness and activity into life," said Sir Stenuon Cooke, general _ secretary of the Automobile AsSpciation of Great Britain, at a recent address to the Auckland Rotary Club. "There are some who regret it, but I do not. It is an .activity that is more than physical, it is a disturbance and awakening of mind and spirit. Travel, contact with new scenes and now people awakens an intellectual curiosity. This in turn leads to a thirst for education and information that is characteristic of a living and vigorous people." Sudden Opening of Doors The sudden opening of a motor-car door on the driver's side while the vehicle is parked, is likely to cause a serious accident. Several cases in which persons were hurt by car doors have been reported recently in Australia. In one case, a cyclist was passing a parked car when the driver opened the door, knocking the cyclist on to the roadway. A passing car struck the suddenly opered door of another vehicle, causing it to slam, fortunately without serious results, on to a leg of the driver, who was about to alight. Drivers should make certain that it 1b safe to open off-side doors before doing so. Cause of Overheating On fairly old cani troubled with overheating, a common cause of the fault will often be found if the radiator hose connections are detached. In course of time the interiors of these become so affected by the beat of the water and the lime deposits present in it, that the layers of rubber inside the hoses commence to rot away, and large flakes strip off, drop into the hose interiors and prevent the free passage of the cooling water. That is why it is a good plan to rene.v these connections at least once every 18 months.
