For a second I ,tood still and gasped, because that gorgeous butterfly seemed somehow to give new life, a different atmosphere altogether to the stuffy, crowded street, , The mere sight of the golden wings in gentle, wavering flight recalled the shaded coolness of a bush-clad track, the glorious freedom of the broad, open spaces in the country and thick scented garden, gay with autumn-tinted bloom,. Yes, all these thing, were called to mind as I beheld that Monarch. Strangely enough,''while about me were hundreds of people, not one of them seemed to be; aware of the king of the countryside flying in their midst. I once read how the butterflies in China are kept sacred, as it is a common belief there that they are the souls of the departed still hovering about the earth.
