DICKENS FELLOWSHIP

The opening meeting of the 13th session of the Auckland Dickens Fellowship was held on Thursday in the Auckland Pen women's Club rooms. Ihe newly-elected president, Mr. G. Cruiekshank, presided over a good attendance. The evening was devoted to ft resumption of the study of "David Copper field," the first portion of which was dealt with last year. The president was in charge of the programme, which embraced chapters 37 and 38, the other readers being Mrs. Kenneth Gordon, Mrs. Cruicksnank, Miss Elsie Haresnape and Mr. T. Clarkson. Dora figured prominently in the evening s section, and at the close the president made an interesting reference to Dickens' first love, Maria Beadnall, the originnl of Dora, and also, in her mature and buxom years, of 1' lora Finching, the irrepressible widow in "Littlo Dorritt." Eight new members were elected.
