SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY COMMENCES TO-DAY APPEARANCE OF J. R. BANHAM The commencement of the Auckland Kugby League's senior championship will be made this afternoon at Carlaw Park. The indications are for keen competition and a high standard of play. The principal attraction is between Mount Albert and l'onsonby and, if the showing of these teams in the games last Saturday can bo taken as a guide, an interesting match should be witnessed.
The appearance of a -number of players now to the c(>dc will be ait added attraction in to-day's contests. Another feature which is bound to appeal to supporters of League football is the fact that J. R. Banhain, the Australian coach, will be playing for the North Shore team against Marist in the curtain-raiser. The members of tlTo North .Shore side arc comparatively young and Banham's experience should greatly assist" the thirteen. Marist proved to be one of the most formidable teams in the competition last year.
Manukau has tho better prospects on No. 2 ground against Newton, which may find its opponents too heavy and speedy. .A new team to the senior ranks, Papakura, will te tested in its match on No. 2 ground against Richmond, winners of last year's championship. Ilic senior reserve tfiade championship will bo commenced on suburban groumfs. Following are tho teams:— MANUKAU Senior Grade—T. Chase, McKinley, ft. Chase, Pile, Kirkwood, Wilson, Ormsby Brimble, Muhima, Wliye, McGuire, Gault. liirinui, Rya/i, Phillips, Zane. Senior Reserve Grade.—Te Tai (2), Otine, Wilson, Bicknell, Greenwood, Scarlet, Jones.
