THE FINANCIAL YEAR AUCKLAND FIGURES AN INCREASE OF £603,465 ALL-ROUND IMPROVEMENT Customs, excise and sales tax returns for the 1937-38 financial year, which closed yesterday, showed an increase at Auckland of £603,465. The total collected from all sources was £5,652,513, against £5,049,018 last year.

Tho customs revenue, including petrol and tyro duties, amounted to £4,412,199, an increase of £451,564, or 11.40 per cent over the figure for the 1936-37 period. Excise on beer produced £201,161, uu increase of £23,630, or 11.7 per cent moro than last year. The sales tax brought in £1,039,150 in tho past year, and £910,879 tho year before, representing an improvement of £128,271, or 14.7 per cent increase. New high records were established during the financial year ended to-day by customs revenue collected in Wellington and also by the amount of sales tax collections. Motor spirit, tyre tax and beer excise for the year also showed a substantial increase. For more than four years now the net customs revenue at Wellington, with the exception of last December, has every month exceeded the figure for the corresponding month of the previous year.

The figures under all heads for the 1937-38 and 1936-37 financial years afford the following comparisons:— Customs duty: 1937-38, £3,848,459; 1936-37, £3,372,666. Sales tax: £1,350,504; £1,146,173. Motor spirit: £867,243; £789,687. Tyre tax: £26,194; £22,565. Beer excise:' £79,085; £63,717. Tho net customs revenue collected last month totalled £320,649, compared with £318,105 in March, 1937.

CHRISTOHUROH FIGURES TOTALS CONSIDERABLY HIGHER [BY TELEGRAPH —rRESS association] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday Customs revenue collected in Christchurch in the financial year ended today was £2,185,031 from all sources, an increase of £302,516 on last year's return. Contributing items to the heavy increase were customs duty, beer excise, petrol tax and sales tax, all of which wore considerably greater. Ordinary customs revenue rose from £1,087,720 last year to £1,263,142; beer duty rose from £104,902 to £125,156; petrol tax, from £255,087 to £290,999; and sales tax from £405,990 to £471,064.
