HOUSEHOLD HINTS
USEFUL HOME METHODS If you have a creaking door, a bit of soap rubbed on the hinge will stop it. When knobs of doors have to be polished, use a large niece of cardboard with a hole in the centre just enough to encircle the knob, and a slit in the cardboard to let it in easily This will prevent the paint from being soiled. To remedy a shoe-lace when the metal tag comes off, twirl that end of the shoe-lace to a point, squeeze on to it a few drops of liquid glue, and again twirl it to a point between the finger and thumb; in a minute the end will harden, and can be laced as et'.sily as if the tat; was there. Brazil nuts and walnuts will come out of their shells whole quite easily if they are placed in a warm oven for a few minutes before being cracked. To prevent rice from sticking, butter the saucepan before putting in the water in which the rice is to he cooked. When baking apples, use honey instead of sugar. The taste is the same, hut it goes right through the apples, and tliero are 110 sour parts when cooked. Sour milk, even when quite thick, is most valuable for mixing pastry, cakes and scones, making them very light.
