MAILBAG THEFT

SUM OF £IOO STOLEN MEN'S REGISTERED LETTERS [BT TEIiEGRAPH — ASSOCIATION'] IXVEIJCARGILL, Tuesday The lnvercargill police have for the past few days been making inquiries concerning interference with a mail bag containing registered letters from workmen employed in Hollvford Valley. It is estimated that the money stolen exceeded £IOO. The workmen had been paid on Wednesday evening, and a large number of them had posted various amounts to their wives and dependents in time to catch the outward mail. Next evening the mailbag was left in a billiard room adjoining the post office, sealed and ready for despatch. The following morning the bag was picked up by the mail contractor and brought to Lumsden, where a slit in the bag was discovered by the acting-postmaster. The matter was reported to the police, who so far are without a clue.
