AMATEUR ATHLETICS
INTER-CLUB CONTESTS SEASON NEARING CLOSE Only a lew more weeks remain of the season for track athletes. Several club meetings will bo held before the season closes, bint the only big meetings still to take place are the competitions at Hamilton and Ngahinepouri during Easter. Aucklanders have patronised these meetings fairly well in the past and another contingent should be competing in the various Qvents this season. The main attraction last week was the meeting at Kllerslie, where there were invitation scratch events between members of the Kllerslie, University and Old Grammarians' clubs. There was no actual competition on points between the clubs, but after some good racing, the Kllerslie comjxjtitors proved the most successful.- M. Baker won the 100 yards easily, but ho did not have the Grammar champion, D. Fie It, to contend with.
The In-st event, was the 880 yards, in which I). Ai. Harris, the brilliant Grammar junior, won narrowly from Baker with L. Johnson right on their heels. The time was 2m os, which was good for the difficult Kllerslie track. F. A. Kinlayson cleared sft. 4in, to win the high jump, but Baker came out again to take the hop. step and jump with an effort of <J()ft. 2iin. The I'liiversity (.'1111» decided two of its scratch events at the same meeting, the 410 yards and the two miles. The former was won by J. Stacev in 50s, while the distance event wont to T. Johnson, who won from W. Chappell ajul S. Wiltshire.
Canterbury will ho making a big effort next season to retain the provincial championship shield which it won this year. The fact that it has engaged A. L. Fitch, the American coach, indicates exceptional .keenness in the southern province.
