WOOL CHEQUE

THE AUCKLAND CLIP SEASON'S REALISATION OVER MILLION POUNDS DECREASE ON LAST YEAR Good prices received on Saturday at the Auckland wool sale exceeded the expectations of sellers and brought tho estimated total for the season well above the £1.000,000 level for the Auckland Province, a figure admittedly lower than the 193637 period but potentially better than any other season since 1928-29. Realisations made on Saturday's sale approximated 30,400 balos at £l4 15s each, which will give growers a likely return of £448,400. Added to the yield of £595,962 from the November and January sales, the total estimated return for tho 1937-38 wool season should be in the neighbourhood of £1,047,362. Last Season no Criterion

The estimated cheque for the current season is short of the one received in 1937 by £481,183. In that year wool recovered from a series of depressed periods since and including the 1929-30 season, with the exception of two welcome improvements in 1933-34 and 193536. It should be recalled, however, that tho 1936-37 cheque represented a peak well above £500,000 more than the realisations from any one of the previous seven seasons, and that tho sharp recovery might not prove a sound basis for comparison. This analysis was the sum total of opinions given by several sheep-farmers who were present at the sale on Saturday, and the majority seemed well content with their returns for this year. Comparative Figures The figures for this year and last are as follows: — 1936-37 1937-38 November .. £439,270 £201,700 January .. 613,552 307,262 March .. 475,123 448,400 (est.) Totals .. £1,528,515 £1,047,362 (est.) A survey oi: the past 10 years shows that apart from the high aggregate of £1,024,682 reached by the 1928-29 season, low levels were maintained from the following year until 1933-34. In that period values were lifted, but thero was a recession in the next and an approximately equal rise to recovery in 1935-36, finally capped with tho high return in 1936-37. The position is revealed in the following table: — Season Total Return 1028-29 .. .. £1,024,(182 1020-30 .. .. 408,717 1030-31 .. .. 323,806 1031-32 .. .. 310.803 1032-33 .. .. 311,887 1033-34 .. .. 034,363 1934-35 .. .. 344,030 1935-36 .. .. 035,621 1936-37 .. .. 1,528,540 1037-38 (est.) .. 1,017,362
