SUDDEN DEATH

MR. THOMAS A. ABHTON OCTOGENARIAN BOWLER The sudden death occurred on Saturday of Mr. Thomas A. Ashton, aged 84" years, of 16 Vincent Avenue, Remuera. He suffered a heart attack and expired soon after he had returned from play on the Rawhiti bowling green. Mr. Ashton was in business in the city as an agent of the Trade Auxiliary Company and he attended at his office as usual last week. Ten years ago Mr. and Mrs. Ashton celebrated their gplden wedding-in-Remuera, but Mrs.. A»lft<!)n died six and a-half years ago. They were married in Pendleton,- Manchester, in 1878, and left For New Zealand in the ship Clyde in 1883, landing in Auckland after a four months' voyage They lived in Ponsonby for a time, and then took up their home in Mount Albert, which was then a completely rural district. For many years there was no footpath farther from the city than. £den Terrace, and Mr. and Mrs. Ashton frequently had to walk home across country. After 40 years in Mount Albert, thev removed to Remuera. 14 years ago. Air Ashton was a, keen bowler and was one of the first members of the Mount Albert Club, of which he was made a life member when he lett the district. Several weeks ago he plaved for the veterans in matches at the Auckland Bowling Club's green at Grafton Road. r ..
