BEEF FOR CHILLING RESEARCH IN WAIKATO IMPORTANCE TO SHEEP FARMS [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON. Friday That the increasing importance to the Waikato of the> raising of chilled beef cattle in conjunction with fat lamb production is recognised was indicated in a report presented at the inaugural meeting of the advisory committee of the Ruakura Farm of Instruction today. It was stated that investigations on this subject at Ruakura were now proceeding along two main lines. The first direction in which research was conducted was the producing and rearing of the cattle to fit in with the surplus grass on sheep farms, and the second was the production of the suitable type of carcase fen - the Home market. The period of calving was being varied in order that cows would calve when there was grass for milk production without robbing the ewes and fattening lambs. An endeavour was also being made to obtaiu a standard of carcase measurements for chilled beef suitable for the Smithfield market, Mention was made of the fact that there was often considerable disagreement between the placing of competition beef carcases m New Zealand as compared with the awards of the Snjiithfield judges. The well-known English expert Dr. J. Hammond had expressed his willingness to obtain reports on the individual animals of any consignment sent by Ruakura.
