VICTORIAN PRODUCTION Gold production in Victoria during 1937 amounted to 145,799 fine ounces, the greatest yield since 1920, valued at £1,275,927 in Australian currency. The annual report of the Victorian Mines Department states thaf, while fewer mines were operating last year than in 1936, more were winning payable quantities of gold. The area under lease for mining at the end of last year was 426,583 acres, compared with 217,203 acres in 1930 and 79,527 in 1931. The increase was due principally to the taking up of 253,204 acres for oil prospecting. The area held on lease exclusively for goldmining was 125,3.51 acres. BULOLO DREDGE RETURNS Total production of Bitlolo" Gold Dredging, Limited (New Guinea) for February was 802002. of fine gold from 897,000 cubic yards. The value in Australian currency at £8 15s a fine ounce was £70,175, giving a working profit of £52,421. The return includes 154,000 cubic yards of tailings, the digging of which was necessitated by a change in the course of one of the dredges. The No. 5 dredge will not be operating at full capacity until about the end of April and the No. 6 dredge will probably commence digging early m the same month.
