NEW UNION FREIGHTER
APPOINTMENT OF MASTER CAPTAIN F. W. COLLINS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] WELLINGTON. Tuesday Captain F. W. Collins has been appointed master of the Union Steam Ship Company's new freighter Korowai, now nearing completion at Glasgow. He will leave by the Aorangi, sailing from Auckland next Tuesday, to take over the Korowai for her maiden voyage out to New Zealand, and lie will be accompanied by Mr. It. Blanapied, who has been appointed chief officer. Mr. L. C. Davics, chief engineer, is already standing by the Korowai on the Clyde. Captain Collins, who arrived in Wellington this evening in command ol the Omana, was born in Dunedin in 1592. Ho served his apprenticeship in the Union Company training ships Dartford and Aparima, and in 1914 entered tho company's sea service as fourth officer of the Moeraki. In the same year he was promoted third officer of the Komata, rose to second officer in 1916 and chief officer in 1923. In August, 1929, he was appointed acting-master of the old Opihi, in which he had held his first position as chief officer. In July, 1932, he became permanent master. In all his 21 years at sea lie has served in .'ls of the company's ships. Mr. Blnnimed was born in 1904 in Guernsey, Channel I-'unds. Ho underwent three years' ciiuetship in H.M.S. Comvav, and afterwards six months Royal* Naval Reserve training. He joined tho Union Company's Aorangi in 192't as fourth officer and has been constantly in the company's service since. Mr. Da vies is a New Plymouth man, aged 57. Ho has served in the Union Company's ships since 1909, and has been :i chief engineer since 1924. For the past eight years he has been in the Wingatui.
