SECRETARY TO BOARD APPLICATIONS TOTAL 150 THE TASK OF SELECTION Information that 150 applications had been received for the position of secretary was given members of the Auckland Hospital Board at a meeting yesterday, when the question of an appointment to this position came before the board.

The chairman, the Rev. W. C. Wood, said the task of selecting a secretary was going to be rerv formidable, since it was absolutely essential that the best man should be appointed. Considerable discussion on the best method of dealing with the applications took place. Suggestions that a special meeting of the board and a select committee should consider the applications were made, but finally it was decided to request the administration committee to reduce the applications to 20. Mr. Wood said this would be done as speedily as possihlo.

Later the names of 11 applicants for the positions of -radiologist and radiotherapist were read. The applicants were from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, England and Germany. It was decided to place the matter in the hands of tho house committee and hospital experts. „ TWO NEW DIRECTORS BOARD'S PROCEDURE CRITICISED Objections to the recent appointment of a chief of the division of medicine at the Auckland Hospital and a chief of the division of surgery were lodged at a meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board yesterday. The appointments of Dr. C. R. Burns and Mr. «T. M. Clarke were made at a special meeting of the board, and yesterday they came forward to an ordinary meeting for confirmation. Dr. J. P. Hastings said he wished to lodge his objection not on the grounds of the qualifications of the selected officers, but because the positions should have been more widely advertised abroad. This would have given New Zealanders resident abroad a better opportunity of applying.

Mr. W. G. Mulholland also said he wished to object, although both of the men appointed were of good name. He could not see, however, that patients in the hospital would be any better served or get better treatment because two directors had been appointed. The objections were noted and tlip appointments confirmed.
