ELLERSLIE WORK

STRETTO AND JACK TAR HORSES FOR PAEROA TRIP GLEN ABB IN GOOD HEART The two Wellington candidates Stretto and Jack Tar were given their final work-outs at Ellerslio yesterday morning prior to leaving for Trontham by the afternoon express. Stretto (Green) was sent six furlongs on tho tan, but was under restraint until the last couple of furlongs when sho came home very strongly to complete the distance in 1.22. She hit out well and is in tip-top order. Jack Tar was not asked to go faster than three-quarter pace over a circuit on the tan.. He hit out freely and appears to be at the top of his form at present. Ho is one of tho most improved horses at Ellerslio and should hold .excellent prospects in the Champion Hack Cup on tho second day of the Wellington meeting.

Arikira (Baker) and Tane Mahutu (Turvey) were schooled over three of the pony hurdles and both shaped exceptionally well for beginners. Arikira showed no tendency to shirk his job on this occasion, while Tane Mahutu, who has had a very limited experience, appears to be a natural jumper.

W. Goscomb arrived from Gisborne yesterday with Hunting Star and Collision and will make his headquarters at Ellorslie.

Fi Gilchrist intends leaving for Paeroa to-day with Tybalt and Rereatu. Other Ellerslio candidates who will bo making the trip are Kilonsa, Land Girl, Ohmaha, To Hai, My Money and Glen Abb.

P. Scally has recommissioned the Captain Bunsby—Drolatiquo filly Droll, who looks in good order to undergo a further preparation.

Since winning tho Dynes Fulton Memorial at the Pukekohe meeting Glen Abb has not been overtaxed and is looking bright and well in view of his Hack Cup engagement at Pneroa on Thursday. The Silvius gelding appears as one likely to develop into a useful middle distance performer. . Although he has an engagement in tho Hikutaia Hack Cup at Paeroa on Thursday presont intentions arc that Ohmaha will contest the Komata Handicap, six furlongs, in preference. In his last couplo of starts the Acre gelding has only been beaten by the narrowest of margins and in his present form lie should go close to scoring on Thursday.

AWAPUNI TRIALS

ORATORY SHOWS DASH LAUGHING LASS BRILLIANT THE CROONER BEATS SURMOUNT [from otra own correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Monday Brilliant times were registered by horses engaged at Trenthap when tho final gallops were performed at Awapuni on Saturday, and the plough, which was fast, was in use for practically all work. A few two-year-olds galloped on the outside of the course proper, which was very hard. Laughing Lass was again the star performer of tho morning by running a fast six furlongs, although The Crooner also impressed. Of the local Thompson Handicap candidates Oratory executed the best trial with a good seven furlongs, the stable-mates Catalogue and Old Surrey being asked to travel a furlong further. On the course proper Dunmanway and Sudan went well over five furlongs. Great Hope ran the last three of four furlongs in 395. Bing Boy and Skyful recorded 40s for three furlongs. Wild flower (Chaplin) ran a smart five furlongs, the last half-mile in 525. She was going very nicely at the finish. The two-year-old Ecstatic (J. Pratt) skipped over half a mile in 52 2-ss. which was a good effort for a youngster. Noisy Night finished just ahead of Baldric over half a mile in 535. Florence Mills, working under restraint, covered a similar distance in 53 2-ss. Ambition could have done better than 54s for half a mile. Clarion Call was going easily to record 565. Lady Ina Goes Well Lady Ina (Howe) jumped away smartly from the five furlongs, cutting out the first two in 24 2-5s and the three in .'36 3-ss. She was on the bit all the way up the straight to complete in 1.4 4-5. She is not a good trial galloper, and this was one of her best track efforts to date. Laughing Lass (J. Pratt) went pleasingly over six furlongs in .1.16 l-ss, the first three in 36 l-ss. It was a fine gallop even though she had little on her back. The Crooner (Johnston) followed Surmount (Tattersall) over the first three of six furlongs in 37s and then drew right away irom the two-year-old in the straight to finish three lengths clear in 1.18. He carried on for another furlong and. a half and pulled up without turning a hair. Forest Glow and Cletrac ran surprisingly well over the six furlongs in 1.20 1-5, the first three in 395. It was a good effort for jumpers. Oratory (Tattersall), after running the two furlongs irt 255, was picked up by Royal Choice (Howe) and she completed seven furlongs in 1.31 2-5. She ran the first five in 1.4 and finished strongly. The gallop showed the Gainscourt mare to be at iier best. Royal Choice also showed a lot of pace. Bluffer's Improvement An improvement on hor recent efforts was shown by Bluffer (Little) in beating Conveyer (Johnston) decisively over seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5. Bluffer went very fast in the early stages to run tho first half-mile in 51s, after the first furlong had taken nearly 14s. Conveyer should not be dropped because of his defeat in this gallop. Warelii finished too well for Tauinau over seven furlongs in 1.34 3-5, tho first five in 1.7. Mefry Thought and La Premiere occupied 1.35 2-5, the first five in 1.8. They were stopping at tho finish. Hunting Queen ran seven furlongs in 1.35 2-5, and was -going comfortably all the way. Old Surrey (Little) pulled hard and led Catalogue (Johnston) to within a stride of the post over a mile, but the latter was just in front at tin- end. On tho course proper Selkirk and Old Bill ran half a mile in 535, the last three furlongs in 38 2-ss. Dunmanway (Dye) ran stronglv throughout five furlongs in 1.4 3-5, the last three in 395. Sudan (Johnston) finished all over Brazil (Little) over a similar journey in 1.4 4-5, the first three in 395. .Sudan's effort was a marked improvement on her recent track form. C. G. Goulsbro has been engaged to ride The Crooner in the St. Leger and Challenge Stakes and his other mounts include Sudan, Bluffer and Brazil (second day). P. Atkins will ride Courtcraft in tho St. Leger. and Conveyer, whilo G. Tattersall will ride Conversion and Surmount (Challenge Stakes). A. K. Ellis lias been engaged for Catalogue in the Thompson Handicap in which race H. J. Callahan will ride Old Surrey. J. Chaplin is mentioned as the likely rider for Silver River and will also have tho mount on Copy Cat.
