PETROL IGNITES

MOTORIST BURNED OUTBREAK FROM ENGINE [bt telegraph—own correspondent] GREYMOUTH, Sunday Severe burns to the neck, face and hands were suffered by Mr. Israel Hymol Balkind. a salesman, aged 33. of Greymouth, when petrol from a motor-car engine he was working on ignited. Mr. Balkind was motoring from Christehurch to the West Coast on Saturday afternoon in company with two other men. A car which they were following stopped several times with engine trouble, and finally Mr. Balkind left his car to assist them.

He began to prime the carburettor of the other vehicle when a sudden issue of petrol spurted up and enveloped his clothes in flames. His companions smothered the outbreak, but his neck and face were badly burned. He displayed remarkable fortitude, driving his car a considerable distance back to Darfield, and after receiving medical attention there was to St. George's Hospital, Christehurch, where his condition is reported to be not serious.
