NIGHT FLYING MISHAP

CRASH AT AERODROME DAMAGE TO MACHINE ESCAPE- OF THE PILOT [by telkguaph—OWN correspondent! PALMERSTON NORTH, Friday There was an unfortunate termination to night flying tests that were being carried out by the Middle Districts Aero Club last night at the Milsom aerodrome, a pilot, Mr. Maurice McKenzie, of Palmerston North, misjudging his landing distance and crashing in the club's Moth aeroplane. Night flying is part of the requirements for B licences, and, starting at about 8 p.m., a number of pilots flew the machine successfully. Mr. McKenzie had also made half a dozen accurate landings with the aid of tlie regulation flares and was on the last flight of the night when the mishap occurred, the time being shortly before midnight. He struck the ground too soon and the machine turned over on its back to break the propeller and damage both wings and the tail. The pilot crawled out of the cockpit unhurt except for a cut o'ver one eye.
