LAWN TENNIS

EXHIBITIONS BY QUIST GREAT AUSTRALIAN PLAYER The attraction for tennis enthusiasts to-day will be the exhibitions at Stanley Street by A. K. Quist, the Australian Davis Cup player. Considered by competent critics to be one of the greatest doubles players in the world at the present time, he is also building up an imposing record in singles play. Quist has represented Australia in Davis Cup contests since 1933, and with J. 11. Crawford, won the doubles championships of France and of Great Britain in 1935. In the same year he created a record by winning all the State singles championships in Australia and he won the championship of Australia in 1936, beating J. H. Crawford in the final. He has always been an efficient strokemaker of the orthodox school and he is also a great tactician. He is essentially an attacking player and it is his remarkable volleying and smashing that have gained him most of his major successes. Quist will be opposed to-day by A. C. Stedman, one of the best players New Zealand has produced. Stedman has returned from his stay overseas with a splendid forehand drive and a very high standard of accuracy in all his strokes. His record in England 'indicates that he is quite capable of extending his famous opponent. Splendid matches should also result in the doubles, when Quist and Stedman will be partnered by A. D. Brown and J. Gunn respectively. Additional attractions will be the final, of the veterans' handicap doubles tournament. and a doubles match between o. Satcheli and A. W. Allen and A. &. Bums and B.
