CONGREGATIONAL UNION j OPENING OF CONFERENCE MANY DELEGATES ATTEND The 55th annual assembly of the Congregational Union of New Zealand opened in Auckland yesterday, when about 100 delegates were, present. A welcome tea was held last evening, when Mr. R. H. Potter, chairman of the Auckland district committee, presided over a large attendance. Archdeacon G. Mac-Murray, who welcomed delegates on behalf of the Anglican Church, referred to the troubles of today, and stated that they constituted a challenge to Christian people to come together for service. The president of the Auckland Council of Christian Congregations, the Rev. R. Ferguson Fish, also addressed the meeting. He referred to co-operation among the Churches. A women's missionary meeting was held yesterday afternoon. Miss H. Smallwood presided. The speakers were Miss Evans, of India, and Miss N. Mill, of Samoa. The Rev. H. Leonard Hurst, secretary of the London Missionary Society for Australia and New Zealand, also addressed the meeting. A combined young people's demonstration was held in the Beresford Street Hall last night. A communion service for delegates will be held at 9.30 o'clock this morning, and at 10 o'clock it will be followed by a roll call, and the induction of the new chairman, the Rev. A.- C. Nelson. There will be an outing this afternoon. A youth rally will take place to-morrow afternoon, and at 5.15 o'clock there will be a basket tea.
