PARNELL SPORTS EVENTS

KEEN RIVALRY AMONG PUPILS As part of the jubilee celebration*! of the Parnell School, the annual sportii day of tho pupils was held in the school grounds yesterday afternoon. Approximately 1.500 parents and friends attended the outing, and enjoyed a programme divided into over 40 events, all. of which were keenly contested. Inter-tribal rivalry was engendered as the result of the competition among lour separate teams, each representative of children of all ages. Trials wore conducted over the past three weeks among all the children in the school, who number nearly 600. The finalists were narrowed down to approximately 200, and those wore seen in action during yesterday's events. Some good running and field athletics wore witnessed, and the competitors wero deservedly encouraged for their efforts. Interest was added by an old boys' race. Gaining most points in tho day's sports, the Arawa team, or tribe, as it is knowr, to the scholars, secured the school shield, which was presented to the captain by Mr. A. G. Harris, chairman of the school committee. Congratulations on their display was extended to all competitors by Mr. Harris. Opportunity was also taken to make presentations to Mr. R. J. Truscott, who has been an assistant master at tho school for three and a-half years and was recently appointed to" tho teaching staff of tho Normal School. The headmaster, Mr. J. W. McGechio, presented a pair of bookends on behalf of the pupils and a water set from tho teaching staff.
