RODNEY DISASTER

FINDING BY CORONER NO CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE DEATHS CAUSED BY ACCIDENT (Received March 10, lO p.m.) SYDNEY, March 10 The inquest into the deaths of the Rodney disaster victims was concluded to-day. The police gave evidence to the effect that the vessel did not appear to be overloaded. The owner of the craft, Mr. Rosman, said he told a deckhand to send the people off the top deck, but they refused to leave. He ordered some of them down, but they immediately returned. The coroner found that the deaths were accidentally caused, hut said it could not be disputed that an excessive number of passengers had been carried on the Rodney's top deck. The master was liable under the Navigation Act, but the evidence did not show that he was guilty of negligence that would approach criminal negligence. .

Nineteen lives were lost when the launch Rodney capsized in Sydney Harbour on February 13. The launch was carrying more than 100 people, who were bidding farewell to the American cruiser Louisville. All were thrown into the water.
