VETERANS' TOURNEY

PLAY AT STANLEY STREET FORMER CHAMPIONS COMPETE Considerable enthusiasm and a pleasing standard of play were features of the veterans' handicap doubles tournament which was staged by the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association at the Stanley Street courts yesterday. For the first time the two-life system, usually only applied to bowls, was tried out and, although it provided a number of additional games which wero much enjoyed by the players, the competition wns rather drawn out and it was found impossible to complete the tournament. Auckland champions of earlier days who competed were A. S. C. Brown, C. F. Quinnell, T. E. Hickson and E. W. Griffiths. GIRLS' CHAMPION SHIPS

RESULTS IN AUSTRALIA (Received March 10, 10.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 10 Playing in the jnnior tennis championships, the New Zealand girl; to-day finished all their matches, with the exception of Miss Hodges, who is in the doubles under 17 years. This match will probably be played on Saturday. In the final of the girls' doubles under 21 Misses Farrell and Irwin (New South Wales) beat Misses Beverley and Douthett (New Zealand), B—G, 6 —l. This was a spectacular match, the volleying and general play being good. The game of Miss Irwin was particularly fine. She is only 15 years of age and is th 3 partner of Miss Hodges in the doubles under 17. The final of the girl£ singles under 19 resulted:—Miss Armstrong (New Zealand) beat Miss Harley (New South Wales), 6—4, 10—8.
