MR, J. H. BELL [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT! | WHANGAREI, Thursday A well-known early settler of the Waikiekie district, Mr. Joseph Hugh 8011, 'died this week at the age of 80 years. Born in the West Indies, Mr. Bell came to New Zealand when 18 years of age and acquired a property at Waikiekie, where lie spent the greater part of his life. He retired from active farming about six years ago. Mrs. Bell predeceased her husband three years ago. There are eight daughters and three sons. MISS E. J. HAWKEN [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT]I WHANGAREI, Thursday The death has occurred of Miss Elizabeth Jane Hawken, in her 73rd year. Miss Hawken was f the daughter of the late Mr. Charles Hawken, one of the first settlers of the Maungatanere district, and spent practically all lier life in the Whangarei County. MR. H. J. J. NEVILLE [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI, Thursday The death has occurred of one of the oldest residents of Waikiekie, Mr. Harry J. J. Neville, aged 72 yours. Mr. Neville was born in England, and came to New Zealand in 1808 with his parents when two years of age. His father, the late Mr. Robert Neville, took tip land at .Waikiekie, and this farm has been in the family's possession that time. Mr. Neville lived thero until the time of his doath, although for a period ho farmed another property. MR. WILLIAM AYSON [BY TELEOIIAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN, Thursday Early Ota go history is recalled by the death of Mr. William Ayson, of Southbrook Estate, Waikaka, at the age of 97. He was a veteran of the Gabriel's Gnily gold rush. Mr. Ayson arrived in Otago by the Royal Albert in 3853, five years after the Philip Laing had landed the first settlers in this city, and later proceeded to Gabriel's .Gully. At the age of 95 Mr. Ayson travelled by air from Dunedin to Blenheim en r.oute to. Tauranga.
