CARTAGE MONOPOLIES

EFFECT OF LICENSING ACT \ LOCAL BODIES' DIFFICULTIES [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT]! ROTORUA, Thursday The opinion that the operation of the Transport Licensing Act was in some instances not in the best interests of local authorities and ratepayers, owing to monopolies being given cartage contractors over some routes, was expressed by the Kotoiua County Council when considering remits for submission to the executive of the New Zealand Counties Association.

It was pointed out that when tenders for metalling and other cartihg contracts were called by local authorities it was frequently found that there was only the one operator licensed to cart over the route, with.the result that the council was unable to- secure competitive prices for its contracts. The council thought that there should be some elasticity in the regulations, so that, no difficulty should be placed in the way of other carters in the district securing temporary permits. A remit on these lines is to be forwarded.
