The tracks were in first-class order, but not fast. On tho plough, Trailer and Iddo, each carrying over 9.0, recorded 1.20 for six furlongs. Trailer travelled very easily. Brunhild and Jaoynth were companions over three furlongs, run in 37 2-ss. For a novice, Jacynth went pleasingly, but in her races this season she has been disappointing. Agog, a free track worker, comfortably defeated Tullamore, who is not, onco round in i.40 3-5. Jazz Boy and an unnamed three-year-old gelding by Hunting Song ran three in 40 2-ss. Greenore and a Commandant gelding recorded 38 2-ss. Greenore will race on the second day. Smart Five Furlongs Haile Selassie, carrying a hurdle horseman, again pleased by running five furlongs in 1.4. At the end of six furlongs Tommy Atkins was leading Slippery and Hamarin in 1.20. Hamarin went poorly. Sardius, under restraint, ran seven furlongs in 1.36, and continued with pace work. W. Young has Sardius in exceptionally fine order. King's Hope was a neck behind Mary Ilose at the end of four furlongs in 51 2-ss, but the former could have done much better. Master Hector and Contact ran once round in 1.53 3-5, there being- little to choose between the pair. Contact went better than on Saturday morning. Hunting Cat and Kahikatoa were not at top once round to register 1.42 3-5. Hunting Cat is back to the form he showed at Wellington in January. Cup Candidates Tested Solio and Liinbohm were not asked for their best to record 1.45 for a i round, after going off very slowly, j Limbohm was again lame when pulled I "I?I Buster Brown and MasJ:er Cyklon, I two Napier Park Cup candidates, were I also sent once round. Master Cyklon finished too well for the other in 1.40 3-5, having a margin of a gooi three lengths. Hastings West worked very freely | and impressively, but she was not galj loped. In a half-mile gallop Quake had the better of Allmetic to run 51 2-ss. Quake went more freely than on Saturday. Hunting Mint coula have done much better than 39 2-5s for three furlongs. Power Chief and Lady Wessex ran seven in 1.34 2-5. Hillside and Charles Hugo, both owned by Mr. G. Priest, but trained in different stables, were tried out over half a mile. The more experienced Charles Hugo had the better of the gallop in 51 2-os. They will be bracketed in tho Maiden Scurry. Earl's Court impressed by the easy manner in which lie ran three furlongs on the grass in 37 3-ss. Ivar was exercised on this track. Hci will appear on tho second day. Laughing Song, Centrepoise and Red Witch finished in line over half a mile on the grass in 50s, the fastest time recorded during the morning for that distance.

NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP When running in the Farewell Handicap at To Aroha on Monday Anion, t [ who finished second, over-reached i badly and cut his quarter. ! | The Illumination —Rita's Lass geldI ing, who is among the entries for the I Bombay Handicap at the Pukekoho i meeting, has had the name' Lighter registered for him. Wanganui on Saturday was the scene of Sigurd's first victory, but observers were not greatly impressed by it. However, he is only a three-year-old and being by Siegfried ho is likely to improve with age. Saccone, who has been spelling since the Christmas meeting at Ellerslie, has again resumed work under E. Pope. This promising gelding fell away a lot in condition after his severe race in the Great Northern Derby. True Bill, who raced under the same ownership, has been turned out indefinitely. Four wins by Alloa have brought him to £2O below the hack winning limit. His early racing efforts wore marred by nervousness but ho is now wellconducted at the barrier, and he should now win his share of races. His dam, Tetranella, is an unraced half-sister to Flying Juliet, winner of the Great Northern Oaks in 1927. * !_ Rebel Star, who is running at the Westiand meeting, has been off the scene for a long time. He has undergone two operations for respiratory trouble, but judging by the manner in which he galloped at Riccarton on Tuesday, Iho may still be capable of winning races. Rebel Star is now trained by his owner, Mr. S. Shaw, father of Mr. J. S. Shaw. The yearling colt bv Bulandshar from The Begum has iiad the name High Caste claimed for him. He is a half-brother to Stretto and Mazir. Konneta is the name under which the Bulandshar —Sunny Hours fillv will race, while the Siegfried—Polonaise colt will be known as Wapaugh. These youngsters, who are under R. S. liagby's charge, have made their appearance 011 the Ellerslie tracks. Senegal, an eight-year-old golding by Nigger Minatrel from the Autuinnus mare Kinsem, received fatal injuries when lie foil with Sergeant Major whilo running in the Cup Bracelet on the second day pf .the Ncwnham Cup meet- : ing (Tasmania) recently. Brought from New Zealand a couple of years ago, lie was raced by Mr. "L. Kassa." He won i 16 races and £969 in stakes in 91 starts I in Tasmania. Tn the absence of Surmount, Russian Ballet had no difficulty in opening her winning account at Wanganui on Saturday. Russian Ballet, who is owned by Mr. R. Grace, cost 350 guineas as a yearling, which was top price for the progeny of Nightmarch oflered at last year's sale. Sho is the most promising of that sire's stock to date and as sho is a daughter of Praise, by Limond from Eulogy, sho has every breeding credential. In her four starts to date, | sho has scored a win and two seconds. Icing has not been a lucky filly but her victory in the Earle Stakes proved that she has become solid and she is now regarded as a likely candidate for the Groat Northern Oaks. After winning the Debutant Stakes at Wanganui, she developed a cough that prevented her showing her best for the rest of her two-year-old racing, but in her two further, starts that season she was placed. Sho was hurt during the ■ running of the Wanganui Guineas and did not race again until the New Year, when sho beat Surmount in a sprint event at Marton. Sho has had 13 races for four wins and is now to stay in open company.
