CONDITION OF ROAD

COMPLAINTS AT OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL PROBLEM Requests for some immediate repairs to the traffic-way of Lower Princes Street were made by a largo deputation of residents which waited on the Otahuhu Borough Council. Several speakers urged the council to carry out repairs that would removo tlio menace to traffic and liie. "The road is in its worst condition for 20 years," said Mr. W. Johns, in referring to th© difficulty confronting motorists in negotiating the potholes. Cyclists were compelled to use the footpath and pedestrians, particularly children, were forced to walk on the highway. There were 26 houses in the street, the rates on which provided a good proportion of the council s income. One speaker said tradesmen had refused to take their vehicles over the road. The Mayor, Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P., said the council had been concerned with the problem for some time. The present council had abandoned the policy of patching roads and had concentrated on permanent work. The road would have to ■bo rebuilt, but the stormwatcr problem had first to be solved. Tho engineer had estimated the cost of this work at over £6OO. If the money could bo raised the work would be put in hand. The Mayor reminded the deputation that the council's policy was to do work out of revenue. Tho general rate iricomo each year was about £-1000. From all sources, including labour subsidies, the Works Committee had spent £14,000 this year on roads and streets. Tho council decided to consider temporary filling of tho worst stretches of the roadway.
