SHORTAGE OF TRUCKS

FERTILISER DISTRIBUTION ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION Reference to the acute shortage of railway trucks at the height of last season, when superphosphate was required in large quantities, was made yesterday by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan. He said that since last season the railway workshops in the North Island had turned out over 500 new trucks. The construction programme had been seriously held up owing to the late delivery of steel from England, otherwise more trucks would have been available for the carriage of superphosphate this season. "I can assure the farming community that the Railway Department is doing everything in its power to provide additional rolling stock as fast as possible," said the Minister. "Farmers taking large quantities of superphosphate can assist by arranging with suppliers for deliveries at the rate at which they can unload trucks, and I would impress on all the need for making arrangements to unload as speedily as possible so as to free the trucks for further services. The quick discharge of railway trucks would help the position considerably."
