Jonathan was tenth fancy 011 both machines in a field of 1-i and returned a dividend of well over a quarter of a century 011 the win machine. Jonathan finished attractively to defeat the consistent Kilonsa and tho three-year-old Courtcraft, who made 0 gallant bid for victory under his bi<r weight. Tho open sprint, tho Farewell Handicap, was won by tho eachvav favourite Suleiman, who won only by a short neck, but had a little in liand. U* addition to Suleiman, tho eachway .favourites Arvakur and Desert Star and tho place favourite Mon Aero were also Successful and all the winners wc.ro well-supported, with tho exception of Jonathan. Misty rain fell just before tho first race and again later, but the track was' in good order, as was evidenced by tho fact that Jonathan run a, mile and a-quarter in 2.1 4-5, time that has not. often been beaten on Auckland courses. .
